The earth's ozone layer is a very important part of the atmosphere that absorbs most of the radiation from the sun that's coming into the earth. The ozone layer is also affected in other ways besides the sun. The ozone layer is located 9.3 to 18.6 million miles above the Earth which acts as a shield against harmful radiation emitted by the sun. The ozone layer today, is a widespread concern with it deteriorating at a solid rate. Pollution chemicals such as chlorine and bromine causes the ozone layer to not be as strong. The deterioration allows ultraviolet B rays to reach Earth which can cause skin cancer and cataracts in humans and can also harm animals. Ultraviolet rays can affect the reproductive system in plankton. Plankton are algae that make up the bottom of the food chain. If plankton start to die off other animal populations will die off as well. Also numbers of species such as fish, salamanders, shrimp and crabs exposed to the ultraviolet rays. The ozone layer overall needs to be looked at in the future to be repaired. The ozone layer keeps harmful rays out Earth which can hurt humans. If we damage the ozone layer to a point where the ozone layer is destroyed we can't be protected from the rays.
