On March 11,2011 an earthquake with the magnitude of 9.0 struck Japan which caused a tremendous amount of damage. A large tsunami came in next which created much more damage. The earthquake resulted in a rare double quake lasting 3 minutes. The earthquake plus tsunami resulted in a death toll of 19,000 people and damage to coastal towns and over one million buildings destroyed or damaged. Another big problem was the Fukushima power plant supplying power to the area which was affected severely by the disaster.
11 nuclear reactors in the Fukushima power plant were operating the day of the quake, and all shut down when the quake hit. When workers were inspecting the reactors after the earthquake they found no significant damage from the earthquake. Then when the tsunami hit destroying many reac, flooding waters caused AC and DC power to be lost and also reactor monitoring, control and cooling functions were also lost. Three reactor buildings were also damaged by hydrogen explosions. The reactors that were damaged poured radioactive materials which contaminated the land in Fukushima and several other areas. The accident prompted widespread evacuations of the local population. Large economic tolls took a heavy hit on the government in clean up efforts and lead to the shutdown of all nuclear power plants in Japan.
